Munneswaram Hindu Kovil is one of oldest devoting place for many ethnic groups in Sri lanka. Munneswaram is an important place for the srilankan Buddhists too. However Annual animal Sacrifice in Munneswaram Kovil has been took place despite the large protests of Buddhists and Sri lankan Society.
Around 300 goats and nearly 1000 chickens were killed and sacrificed to Hindu Goads.
A large number of Buddhist monks protested on this animal killing at Chilaw (Puttalam). However Police stops the march of the Buddhist monks towards Munneswaram Kovil. Then monks then seated on the road and started to continue protest until stopping of animal sacrifice.
National Buddhist Movement said that they have made numerous appeals to government officials to stop this animal sacrifice in the Hindu temple. However officials had not made any positive reactions against the killings.
Munneswaram Hindu Temple's animal sacrifice stopped in 1977. However it has started again and said that it backed by government support
